Leeds Refugee Week – 14th – 21st June

Refugee Week is a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events and activities that celebrates the contribution of refugees to the UK and promotes better understanding of why people seek sanctuary. Anyone can get involved by organising, attending or taking part in activities.

In Leeds events are co-ordinated by Leeds Refugee Forum and a full programme of 17 main events can be downloaded from their website here Leeds Refugee Week Programme.

Here are a few highlights:

  • Screenshot 2014-06-10 13.44.47Refugee World Cup: Sunday 14 June. This is always an amazing event that usually includes international players now exiled from their home country.

  • Wonderful Women of the World, Friday 19th June at West Yorkshire Playhouse. Last year’s event was outstanding with amazing celebration in song, poem and dance.
  • Burmantofts Gala and Cultural Day, Saturday 27th June. This one is always outside of the ‘official’ refugee week because it a local community event. Leeds Refugee Forum used to organise a big party at the end of refugee week but wanted to be more engaged with the local community so moved their own event to combine with others in the area.
